McAfee WebShield Appliance 3.0 Delivers 'First Line of Defense' Protection at the Internet Gateway.
McAfee today announced the availability of McAfee WebShield 3.0 Software for Appliances. McAfee WebShield, which is part of the McAfee Secure Content Management solution set, provides anti-virus protection, content scanning and, as part of an optional upgrade, anti-spam protection at the Internet gateway. Small to large businesses can access significant improvements through the new version, including full policy enforcement, enhanced content scanning and additional management capabilities.
The McAfee Appliance family consists of the McAfee e250, e500 and e1000 appliances, which are designed to provide anti-virus, content filtering and spam protection from the edge of the network to the server. With McAfee WebShield software, IT managers can secure content entering and leaving the organization, alleviating the problem of unwanted email as well as ensuring that malicious code and viruses cannot infect the network. McAfee WebShield scans incoming and outgoing traffic as it reaches the Internet Gateway, helping to optimize resources, increase productivity and prevent industry and company policy compromises. Additionally, McAfee SpamKiller software is also available to run with WebShield software on the McAfee appliances, providing six-levels of proactive rules-based protection that includes heuristic detection, bayesian filtering and integrity analysis.
"McAfee WebShield Appliance 3.0, with its user-friendly '1-2-3' out-of- the-box configuration process, is extremely easy-to-use and configure," said Shan Tilakumara, information technology director with Chapman Taylor. "The solution offers our business peace of mind in knowing that our in and outbound content is secure. It helps our IT department fulfill requirements to be compliant with security best practices, and addresses concerns of employee productivity, legal liability and network resources."
"Securing the content entering and leaving an organization's network is one of the most important issues facing IT directors in today's market," said Brian Burke, research analyst with IDC. "It is important for today's secure content management solutions to provide protection for the key nuisance areas -- anti-virus, spam and content filtering -- ideally in a combined or integrated solution. The McAfee WebShield and SpamKiller appliance solutions secure content using multiple approaches, which include policy controls for virus protection, content and spam-filtering rules, to block unwanted mail before it can enter the organization."
McAfee WebShield Appliance 3.0 includes a number of new features, including full policy support, which gives IT administrators the ability to identify logical groups and apply different rules for anti-virus, anti-spam and content filtering, a new dashboard and configuration wizard that offers greater visibility to its health and information status on a single dashboard display, and SMTP transport logging, to help administrators in debugging, troubleshooting and forensic activity.
"McAfee WebShield appliances are configure-and-forget solutions that are easy to use, easy to manage and easy to deploy," said Steve Crutchfield, director of product marketing for McAfee, Inc. "The appliances offer integrated anti-virus, anti-spam and content filtering functionality, advanced policy management technology and unmatched performance, ensuring McAfee customers can secure the content of their messaging traffic"
The McAfee Appliances integrate with McAfee ePolicy Orchestrator (ePO), providing IT administrators with graphical reporting on key virus activity at the gateway, detailed reports on content filtering rules that have been triggered as well as any messages that have been identified as spam. In addition, full virus trend analysis and reporting is available, ensuring the administrator always has a bird's-eye view of infections.

The McAfee WebShield Appliance 3.0 is now available from McAfee and its channel partners in the United States.
