Kim Paulsen, group publisher of Penton Media's (OTCBB: PTON) Windows & .NET Magazine Network, announced that Windows & .NET Magazine will undertake a new editorial direction and change its name to Windows IT Pro, effective with the September 2004 issue.
The new tag line, "Connecting Technology, Business, and the IT Community," conveys Windows IT Pro's central role in defining and leading the IT community. In addition to Windows IT Pro, the network includes SQL Server Magazine.
"There are a number of innovative features that will be coming with the September issue," Paulsen said. "In addition to more enticing entry points and sidebars to help draw readers into the magazine, we'll have a new focus on content that will help IT pros sell technology solutions within their business and better position themselves as leaders within their companies." Paulsen added, "We will remain focused on the people who make business computing work, and we will enhance our position as the voice and advocate of the IT pro community."
"Our readers tell us that as IT professionals, they face daily technical, business and career challenges. Windows IT Pro makes those readers heroes by connecting them with peers who've done the dirty work and solved problems for them, connecting them with third-party vendors whose products help save time and money, and connecting their needs with Microsoft's developers," said editorial director Karen Forster. "Unlike other publications, Windows IT Pro is all about community: Our articles make IT pros' jobs easier with how-to content that is extensively reviewed for technical accuracy and results from real-world experience of the people who make it work. Our senior contributors are recognized industry gurus with proven track records of producing outstanding how-to content. Other publications focus on sharing the voice of Microsoft, but we are the voice of the IT community and the facilitator of industry understanding and growth."
More than 30 of Windows IT Pro's regular writers and speakers are recognized as Microsoft MVPs, a designation bestowed on fewer than 2,600 technical experts worldwide. Plans for the magazine's new focus include expansive product coverage with clear recommendations and caveats for implementation, as well as new columns to aid in business decision-making, cost-justification and career. Features will include profiles of real-world success as well as debacles that will help readers avoid pitfalls and apply hard-won lessons in their own technology implementations. Most important, the Solutions Plus articles will give readers hands-on, how-to guides for solving tough problems. Readers can save these tear-out articles and use them to create custom toolkits.
A number of professionals who have made the network a success and who will be spearheading the new direction of the group have been recently promoted or brought back on board. Kim Paulsen was promoted to group publisher, Peg Miller to associate publisher, Don Knox to director of the custom media group and Michele Crockett to associate publisher of SQL Server Magazine. Karen Forster, who helped build both Windows & .NET Magazine and SQL Server Magazine when she served as editor-in-chief of those publications, has re-joined the network as group editorial director of Windows IT Pro after spending two years at Microsoft as director of Windows Server user assistance. As the only editorial director in the industry to have spent time working at Microsoft gaining an even stronger understanding of IT pro issues and needs, one of her signature contributions to Windows IT Pro will be her column, "Hey Microsoft!", in which she will pose a question to the IT community, and then take that feedback to Microsoft for a response and to help guide product improvements.
"We've served as the leading conduit of information between the IT professional community, their companies and the technology industry since our inception in 1995," said Paulsen. "We provide an independent source of information for IT administrators and managers, and then carry the message about their current and future professional needs back to Microsoft and other technology producers."
