Gmail's email scanning practice has had privacy advocates fuming and caused US officials to write bills limiting the use of scanned mailings.

Undaunted, Gmail has continued placing ads within mailings. Serving as an indication that this policy isn't going away, Google has issued their standards for the content of the ads being placed.

Because the ads are based on the content of the mailing, Google felt it necessary to release a group of topics that would not have ads associated with them. The "banned" list includes drugs, guns, sex, or pornography.

A quote from Susan Wojcicki, Google's director of product management, in an article from the NY Times, appears on SearchEngineLowdown.com. Wojcicki said about these standards, "we want the ads to be family friendly. There are some topics for ads we have decided that are not appropriate to be shown on e-mail."
