Rumors coming from Mountain View, California suggest that search engine leader Google may be prepared to launch new software that would enable users to search for information on their computers.

This file and text search software would be a direct challenge to Microsoft and their upcoming Longhorn operating system, which is planning to include similar technology. Google spokespeople declined comment on the software, codenamed Puffin.
According to the New York Times, Google has had this software running on their systems for over a year. Google's push of their desktop search software is being seen as a defensive one. It is believed that Microsoft's new search is hoping to do away with browser based searches, because Longhorn will give you ability to search your computer and the internet without having a browser open.

Not wanting to go the way of Netscape, Google is making preemptive moves to stay competitive, if not ahead of Microsoft. If their desktop search is available anytime soon, this will give them close to a 2 year head start on Longhorn.

When released, "Puffin" will be available from Google as a free download.
