The US-based search engine Google has found a base of operations for its excursion into the European market. Google has decided to make its European headquarters in Dublin. The area is a former Gasworks site that is located in the dock area of the city.
The rental property is 60000 square feet of land that was part of a development plan called Gasworks. The lease calls for Google to pay 42-43 Euros per square feet. According to Eircom.net, an Irish news site, one source speculates that Google may have secured a "significant rent-free period."
Eircom went on to say that they believed Google choose Ireland as its base because of "the internet firm's determination to (capitalize) on the weakness of Dublin's office market where rental values in outer city developments have sunk by as much as 20 per cent over the last two years."
Business practices aside, this announcement will boost Ireland's digital industry. Google has stated that it will create 200 jobs in Dublin, with recruiting having already begun.
Google is expected to complete its move by the end of the year.
