The battle lines for search supremacy have been drawn. Google, the presumed search engine leader, is gearing up to ensure that their search engine is versatile enough to endure.

In an interview with News.com, Salar Kamangar, product development director at Google, said in regards to Microsoft's announcement they were planning to enter the search engine fray, "rather than worry about some big promise coming down five years from now, we need to focus on innovation now".

Google focus lies improving their product to ensure it maintains a high user rate. These new features have been covered ad infinitum, but with good reason. Google is now the most recognized brand name in the USA. Some of these features include Google's new Webmail program called Gmail.

The company has also introduced new features in its search engine like Local Search, Froogle (Google's shopping search), and a revamped look for their AdSense/AdWords program, as well as a new pricing format.

Another application that Google is working on is a desktop search app. This will allow people to find information on the web without using a web browser. Google's desktop will be a direct challenge to Microsoft's Longhorn project, Microsoft's next OS. Longhorn is being designed to include the ability to search without a browser also.

Danny Sullivan of the SearchEngineWatch.com, posed to News.com, "will Google's new, free e-mail system, Gmail, be just the first of many things we'll see in a new Google desktop? If so, Microsoft could have a lot more to worry about than just Web search."
