People are only optimizing for a small fraction of available search terms, according to a statement made by Overture's Dan Boberg.

"Thirty-five to forty percent of all searches are commercial searches and eighty to eighty-five percent of these search terms are untapped," Boberg said earlier today at the Webmasterworld Publishers Conference VI.

Boberg was a speaker during the conference's Pay-Per-Click Bid and Spend Maximization session in Orlando, Florida.

By "untapped" Boberg means people are not currently optimizing for those search terms.

There has been some criticism of this statement by industry professionals doubting its accuracy.
