A fire is burning in the search engine world.

"The 'Search Engine War' is back on," Brett Tabke, founder and CEO of WebmasterWorld.com, announced Thursday, after Yahoo unveiled its new YahooSlurp.

This is just the latest evidence that search engines are revving up for a battle in 2004 - and the reigning champion Google is going to have to fight to keep its users dedicated.

Google co-founder Sergey Brin still has high hopes for the search engine, even though it faces some serious competition. One source for this hope is Google's AdWords, the popular service that allows users to pay for keyword-relevant links on search engine results pages.

AdWords, which gained popularity with the rise of contextual advertising in 2003, already has participation from thousands of publishers. Google strives to be a leader in the latest online advertising technology and Moscow-native Brin promises that AdWords will evolve to keep up with the constantly changing world of online advertising.

However, it should be noted that AdWords' top competitor Overture is owned by, you guessed it, Yahoo.

Some experts are wondering if the years to come might bring a return of the former search engine king.

"This is one of the hottest topics on WebmasterWorld," Tabke says. WebmasterWorld's upcoming conference this week features representatives from both Yahoo and Google and promises to provide some "illuminating" insight.

Even if you are unable to attend the conference, you can catch full coverage and exclusive live reports from WebProWorld, your forum for e-Business news and information.
