October 2010 is the seventh annual National Cybersecurity Awareness Month, which is sponsored by the Department of Homeland Security. In celebration, I wanted to share with you a few of the cybersecurity tips recommended to keep you and your loved ones safe in the world wide web.

Welcome To National Cybersecurity Awareness Month!

First and foremost, keep your antivirus software up to date with the latest version and definitions. This is the best thing you can do to keep your computer safe from invasion from malicious software. Most worthwhile AV software out there has live scan feature where it constantly monitors traffic into your computer and blocks (or at least notifies you of) anything that it deems potentially harmful to your computer. One important thing to remember is that even the best antivirus protection in the world cannot block everything every time, so it is a good idea to occasionally run a system scan to see if anything made it past the first line of defense. Once a week is a good schedule for doing so. You can usually set your computer up to run a scan automatically.

Along with this protection, you should also make sure that you have a firewall set up to block incoming attacks. A firewall stops traffic from accessing unused ports on your computer and accessing your system that way. Most routers have a firewall built in, so if your computer is behind one, you're probably safe. If you are using a dial-up connection it's not as big of a deal, but still advisable.

Finally, the best thing you can do for yourself is to be educated in what can be harmful to your computer. Only open email attachments from sources that you know and trust. Don't download things from websites that seem shady. Be smart about your browsing habits. Do this and your internet experience can be a safe and happy one.
