With stories concerning the cyberattacks on Google and other companies still popping up on a regular basis, this may come as something of a surprise - or even seem wrong - but new data from Sophos indicates that China isn't a huge source of spam. Indeed, China's name didn't even appear on a new list of the top twelve spam-relaying countries.

Instead, the good old U.S. of A. secured the number one spot, relaying 15.1 percent of the world's spam, according to Sophos. India came in second place, relaying 7.3 percent of the world's spam, and Brazil followed in third with its percentage pegged at 6.8 percent.
South Korea, Vietnam, Germany, the U.K., Russia, Italy, France, Romania, and Poland then wrapped up the "dirty dozen" list, with the U.K., Russia, and Italy tying if you're concerned with the specifics.
China just secured 15th place, with Sophos saying it relays 1.9 percent of the world's spam.
Graham Cluley, a senior technology consultant at Sophos, responded by writing, "All eyes aren't so much on which countries are on the list, but the one which isn't. China has earnt itself a bad reputation in many country's eyes for being the launch pad of targeted attacks against foreign companies and government networks, but at least in the last 12 months they can demonstrate that the proportion of spam relayed by their computers has steadily reduced."
Cluley also added, "A new dirty 'gang of four' - South Korea, Brazil, India and their ringleader USA - account for over 30% of all the spam relayed by hacked computers around the globe."
Spam-fighting efforts - along with whatever rude things people think upon being hit by some spam - may need to be refocused as a result.
