A well-known computer security company is working hard this week to salvage its reputation. After issuing a software update that effectively disabled many computers, McAfee's worked out several ways to solve the problem, indicated that it will reimburse people who spent money getting their PCs fixed, and offered subscription extensions.

A little background info: on Wednesday, McAfee released a faulty signature update file that identified a Windows system file as a virus. Computers running Windows XP with Service Pack 3 didn't fare so well as a result.
Now, McAfee's published a list of support numbers, and people who can't work things out over the phone can either download a software fix from a different computer or ask to have a CD delivered to them.
Then here's another key point: McAfee stated in a blog post, "If you have already incurred costs to repair your PC as a result of this issue, we're committed to reimbursing reasonable expenses. Steps to process your reimbursement request will be posted in the next few days. Please check back here in a few days."
Finally, the company said, "Because we value our loyal customers, if your PC was rendered inoperable or severely impaired as a result of the faulty file released you are eligible for a two year extension of your existing McAfee subscription free of charge."
