The latest spam and virus report from Postini has arrived, and believe it or not, the news isn't all bad. Postini found that spam volume fell by an impressive 12 percent between the fourth quarter of last year and the first quarter of this one.

The good news doesn't quite stop there, either. On the Official Google Enterprise Blog, Gopal Shah, a member of the Google Postini Services team, wrote that this "follows a trend of quarterly decreases in overall spam levels that started after the surge in Q2'09."
Still, as you might expect, there are plenty of spammers and unwanted emails in circulation. The spammers haven't exactly waved a white flag, either. Shah later added, "[S]pam volume was still 6% higher this quarter than it was during the same period in 2009, and spam volume as a percentage of total email messages is holding steady."
Spammers are continuing to craft their messages around the potentially attention-grabbing concepts of inexpensive prescription drugs and celebrity gossip, too, along with top news stories like the earthquake in Haiti (so look out for spam about the earthquake in China).
As for what's happened on the virus front, the positive news is that virus levels fell after a fourth-quarter surge. The bad news is that the late 2009 surge was a big one, "with levels rising from 0.3% of total spam in the first half of the year to 3.7% in the second," according to Shah.
