The Tor community suffered a slight scare this week as a security breach was announced. Apparently two out of seven directories authorites were compromised earlier this month, along with a metrics server. Fortunately, it looks like Tor remains as safe (or safer) than ever.

Tor developer Roger Dingledine addressed a number of important questions in a message that also served to reveal the problem. Here's perhaps the most crucial fact he relayed: no one gained the ability to identify Tor users due to the breach.
No one changed Tor's source, either, and since so much information about how Tor works has already been made public, there's not much of a concern that anyone picked up some knowledge that should've remained private. Indeed, Dingledine thinks the hackers weren't even targeting Tor so much as its handy-dandy machines.
Finally, Dingledine stated, "We've taken steps to fix the weaknesses identified and to harden our systems further. Tor has a track record of openness and transparency, with its source code and specifications and also with its operations. Moreover, we're disclosing breaches such as this so you can monitor our status. You shouldn't assume those who don't disclose security breaches never have any!"
Tor 0.2.1.22 has been introduced in response to the hack.
