The federal government - or at least the arm of it known as the Federal Trade Commission - may soon weigh in on the benefits and risks associated with cloud computing. The FTC has promised to consider the subject at a meeting to be held later this month.

The FTC held one roundtable discussion about cloud computing in early December, and a letter that David Vladeck, head of the Bureau of Consumer Protection at the FTC, wrote afterwards made it into circulation this week.
Vladeck stated in the letter, "[T]he storage of data on remote computers may . . . raise privacy and security concerns for consumers. For example, the ability of cloud computing services to collect and centrally store increasing amounts of consumer data, combined with the ease with which such centrally stored data may be shared with others, create a risk that larger amounts of data may be used by entities in ways not originally intended or understood by consumers."
So the FTC intends to have a second chat about cloud computing on January 28th, and a third one on March 17th, as well.
We'll see where this goes. It's unlikely that a flat-out judgment either for or against "the cloud" will result, but at the least, these meetings may help educate the public about related security issues.
