Three models of Kingston Secure USB drives may not quite be quite as safe as promised. Indeed, Kingston announced today that an unspecified problem will make it necessary for users to send a lot of devices back to the manufacturer for a fix.

An official security update broke the bad news by stating, "It has recently been brought to our attention that a skilled person with the proper tools and physical access to the drives may be able to gain unauthorized access to data . . ."
The update then explained that the affected drives are the DataTraveler BlackBox (DTBB), the DataTraveler Secure - Privacy Edition (DTSP), and the DataTraveler Elite - Privacy Edition (DTEP).
If you have one or more of these devices sitting around, be sure to back up any information worth keeping before sending it (or them) to Kingston. Kingston's promised to delete any files it finds, so whether you're storing top secret documents or photos of the family dog, they'll disappear. (Note: deleting sensitive files yourself is still a good idea, of course).
Otherwise, just contact your local Kingston representative (the U.S. and Canada reps can be reached at 888-484-9125) to get the ball rolling.
