The German government is supporting an interesting plan to fight malware nationwide. ISPs will, as they've been known to do in other circumstances, look for unusual traffic patterns, and then computer owners who are suspected to be in trouble will be advised to visit a special website or telephone a brand new call center for help.

The Federal Office for Information Security and the Association of the German Internet Industry are behind this idea. The site will offer antivirus software, the call center will supposedly employ about 40 people, and everything should kick off sometime in 2010.
Obviously, this doesn't sound like a cheap proposition, and unfortunately, one detail that hasn't materialized is how the funding will be handled. It would be interesting to know whether the German government or a group of ISPs is taking a greater financial interest in cleaning up infected computers.
Still, the fact that such a big, brick-and-mortar-style step is being taken is sort of fascinating by itself.
John Leyden reported, "A statement by eco (a German Internet Industry Association), explains that the project aims to take Germany out of the top 10 countries harbouring the highest number of malware infected systems. Germany currently ranks third on this list of shame."
