The people at ISP Demon Internet are almost certainly wishing their employer had a different name today. A data mishap has made it way too easy for about 3,700 customers - plus a lot of privacy advocates and random onlookers - to describe the company as devilish.
 | | Demon Internet Spills Customers' Details | | John Oates reported that an email apparently from Demon's director of customer service went out this morning to "thousands of business and government subscribers." The director and/or whoever used his account shared some pieces of information relating to e-billing that were within acceptable limits.
The problem was that "the email also has a .csv attachment with 3,681 customer records on it. Entries include names, emails, telephone numbers and what looks very like a user name and password."
Not at all the sort of stuff that's supposed to be spread around, in other words.
Demon seems to have accepted responsibility for the problem, chalking it up to human error and promising to get in touch with customers whose information was exposed. Of course, it's also promised that this sort of thing will never happen again.
Still, the incident serves as a reminder that people can only do so much to protect themselves when other entities also play a role in the security process.
