No matter how much skill and expertise other companies have demonstrated, sometimes it's just nice to know that a corporate behemoth is backing up a product. And people who feel that way about security software are about to get a treat, as Microsoft Security Essentials should be released soon.
 | | Microsoft: Free Security Software Due Within Weeks | | Microsoft emailed some beta testers this morning to thank them for their involvement and encourage them to upgrade to the latest available version. Pretty standard stuff.
Except for a couple of lines towards the middle of the email, anyway. The Microsoft Security Essentials Team wrote, "Your participation has been instrumental to ensuring the best possible product release quality. . . . The final version of Microsoft Security Essentials will be released to the public in the coming weeks."
Now let's focus on that last word. Although "weeks" could apply to a long timespan like 104 weeks, Microsoft's employees are probably familiar with the term "months," and so picked "weeks" because it's more accurate. We might be looking at a release within the next seven weeks, then (since "month" would become "months" at the eight-week mark).
Those of you who want to see what a corporation with a $225 billion market cap can do for the security community should keep your fingers crossed.
