Today, as was expected, Albert Gonzalez pleaded guilty to 19 charges related to computer hacking and credit card fraud. Gonzalez was a key player in what prosecutors called the largest instance of identity theft in U.S. history.
 | | Gonzalez Pleads Guilty To 19 Charges | | Gonzalez was indicted about three weeks after being connected to the theft of credit and debit card data from TJX, OfficeMax, Boston Market, Barnes & Noble, and a number of other companies. Roughly one week ago, we learned that he intended to accept a plea deal.
The fact that Gonzalez followed through means that he should serve between 15 and 20 years in prison for these crimes, and that he'll have to forfeit more than $1.6 million in cash and goods including Rolex watches and a BMW.
According to Reuters, we'll have to wait a little longer to find out the specifics, though. "Judge Saris set a sentencing date in December, but first intends to review how authorities might compensate his victims, including the retailers, banks that issued payment cards and millions of individuals," an article reported.
There's also the unresolved matter of some charges Gonzalez must face in New Jersey, since today's guilty plea only applied to charges brought against him in Boston and New York.
