Symantec has been monitoring the confirmed distributed denial of service (DDoS) cyber attacks targeting Twitter and Facebook. Users visiting the Twitter and Facebook homepages may notice a slow down or may not be able to gain access to the sites at all.

Symantec says it is not known at this time if malware is involved in carrying out this attack. In a blog post Twitter said that no user data was compromised in the attack and that the activity is about saturating the service with so many request that it cannot respond to legitimate requests leading to a denial of service to users.

In a blog post Symantec said," This form of attack, which dates back a decade or so, has become a favored form of disruption both malicious and political in nature. Sites, big and small, have fallen victim to DDOS attacks. Examples include big brand name online retailers, news and government sites."

"For those on the inside of a corporate web admin department, defense against these attacks is part of the daily arsenal. Just a few weeks ago, the US Department of Defense sent out a request for commercial products that can alert the admin staff of a distributed DOS attack within 5 minutes of the event."

Symantec recommends all Internet users do the following:

Run a good internet security suite.
Keep your computer updated with the latest patches and updates.
Don't use "free" security scans that pop up on many websites. All too often these are fake, using scare tactics to try to get you to purchase their "full" service.
Back up your computer.
Check your bank and credit card accounts to make sure that all your transactions are legitimate.
