Well, here's hoping that you enjoyed the respite. Although the takedown of McColo had a definite effect on spam levels, they've rocketed back up, and McAfee has asserted that spam and botnet problems are now at an all-time high.

A formal statement from the company declared, "Spam volumes have increased 141 percent since March, continuing the longest streak of increasing spam volumes ever, according to McAfee, Inc.'s Q2 Threats Report . . ."
As for the botnet issue, the statement continued, "More than 14 million computers have been enslaved by cybercriminal botnets, a 16 percent increase over last quarter's rise."
And Mike Gallagher, SVP and CTO of McAfee Avert Labs, said, "The expansion of these infections is a grave reminder of the potential harm that can be caused by unprotected computers in homes and businesses."
Obviously, this doesn't represent good news. We might have at least hoped for a year of relative peace after McColo's shutdown.
Still, if forced to hunt for a bright side, we could note that the increases took place during a recession, and as the economy recovers and people grow less desperate, spam problems might become less serious. Might.
There's another thing to hope for, then. Keep your fingers crossed.
