This is probably a big reason why many bigger corporations are hesitant to adopt a social media strategy of any kind.

Apart from the obvious productivity factor, there is room for exploits, especially when you start getting into applications within the social networks. This point was driven home recently when researchers showcased a "facebot" application in Facebook using a simple National Geographic "Picture of the Day" app.

According to the researchers, a "facebot" application could grab personal details from a user's Facebook account and post them to a remote server.

Read Write Web writes:

The internal IT department, headed by the CIO, no longer acts as the gatekeeper for all new technology coming into the enterprise. IT may stand at the gate to the castle, but SaaS and social media startups are swimming across the moat. Internal IT can still set fire to the moat and otherwise make life difficult.

It's an unfortunate problem as companies not utilizing social media are missing out on a lot of potential opportunities. IT departments could block social networks, but they would also be blocking leads and branding.

The networks themselves may take measures to stay secure, but social network security as a whole is probably going to be an increasingly important topic as social media continues to gain popularity, and see widespread use among more platforms. Social networks are being integrated more with mobile devices, blogs, and business web sites, and this is where trouble could really start to snowball.
