McAfee unveiled its new Artemis Technology, which utilizes cloud computing technology to address security threats in real time. The company claims Artemis "dramatically increases the level of computer security."

McAfee cites "the protection gap" as the necessity precipitating the Artemis invention. With traditional security software, new threats can take hours or days to address. Artemis, says the company, has the capability of addressing those threat signatures in seconds.

Artemis is powered by McAfee's Community Threat Intelligence, which gleans information from security researchers, threat honey pots, and all of the systems protected by McAffee. This real-time service in the cloud is said to eliminate the delay caused by existing threat signatures updated to individual computers.

"The traditional signature-based approach to detecting malware is no longer enough," said Charles Kolodgy, research director for IDC's Security Products service. "While user behavior has changed and the threat landscape has evolved, malware detection technology generally hasn't kept pace.

"McAfee's program represents a major shift in how the massive increase in malware should be dealt with. This approach returns the innovation initiative to the defense, one-upping malware writers."

The company says there is no charge to upgrade and that Artemis is presently available as part of McAfee Total Protection Service, and later this month for Virus Scan Enterprise.

The FBI estimates the average cost per attack is $1,200 for consumers and $350,000 for businesses, in addition to data loss and other concerns. The threat seems to be flowing rather than ebbing.

"McAfee Avert Labs projects a true malware onslaught this year with 300 percent more malicious programs in 2008 compared to 2007," said Jeff Green, senior vice president of McAfee Avert Labs. "Clearly today's threat landscape requires a different approach to malware detection.
