With a dozen patches on tap for Microsoft for August 12th, security pros should note seven of them will arrive as fixes for critical issues.

A Critical-rated patch means the problem presents a threat of being remotely exploitable if left unpatched. Security administrators will have plenty of those to assess next week.
The Advance Notification from Microsoft about August's 12 patches noted 7 of them received the Critical rating; the remaining 5 were graded as Important. The Internet Explorer browser and the Office productivity suite require Critical fixes.
Various components of Microsoft Office 2000 through 2007 received mention as needing these patches. The sensitivity of each part of Office to the flaws depends on the version.
For example, Excel 2000 Service Pack 3 needs the fix to correct a Critical, remote execution flaw. But later versions of Excel, from 2002 through 2007, list the need for the fix as Important, which is one step down.
Mitigating the risks from the potential for exploit, both pre- and post-patch, requires the same thing of people. A little vigilance and skepticism of incoming documents or links, especially from unknown senders, should help keep a system or network safe.
