Though delayed by issues in the past, including a couple in the past three months, Microsoft's SP3 for Windows XP should start hitting machines running the OS and Automatic Update on Thursday afternoon.
Microsoft disclosed the update schedule on its support pages. This will be pushed out to machines eligible for the service pack, something that administrators will want to anticipate.
InfoWorld noted the automatic arrival of the new service pack can be stopped by either modifying Automatic Update, or by using a service pack blocker from Microsoft to halt it.
