Big screens and a useful interface made the iPhone a must-have gadget for thousands of people. Many of them want to use it with their day jobs, but security pros tend to balk at letting new gadgets tap their networks, especially in an unsecured way.
With demand from financial and banking professionals for secure access, Check Point VP of product management Bob Egner told SecurityProNews how the company expanded VPN-1 support to the iconic device. He also cited interest from the healthcare and government sectors in providing a secure gateway for the iPhone.
Egner said email access featured at the top of the minds of people looking for safe iPhone network access. In sensitive industries like the financial world, federal regulations and other issues mean a leaked email could lead to a host of punitive action from several quarters.
"With VPN-1 administrators can take advantage of a shared secret password and certificates for all iPhones on the network with specific login credentials for each end user," Check Point said. "The feature eliminates the need for IT to create separate gateway authentication keys for each device, easing the deployment of iPhones on the network."
Egner mentioned the VPN-1 product connects natively to the iPhone's embedded L2TP client. This support should speed up deployment of VPN-1 to iPhone users, once administrators put it through its paces (undoubtedly on their iPhones first.)
