Baker College in Flint, Michigan, sent the team that ended up with top honors at CCDC for their achievement during the three-day competition, held in San Antonio. They finished ahead of second place winner Texas A&M University, which was last year's champion, and third place University of Louisville.
CCDC said its competitions are unique because they focus on business operations and incorporate the operational aspect of managing and protecting an existing network infrastructure. The teams inherited an "operational" network from a fictional business complete with e-mail, Web sites, data files, and users.
Then the fun began, as the student teams faced attacks aimed at crippling the network. Baker College's reward will be an invitation to participate in a broader attack simulation at the Department of Homeland Security: the March 2010 Cyber Storm III National Cyber Security Exercise.
Fifty-six teams took part this year, from two-year and four-year colleges and universities. The initial 2005 contest featured five schools in competition.
The skills of all the competitors will be in need in the coming years. Online attacks, from ones aimed at financial gain to the most sophisticated efforts at cyber espionage, should give any budding security pro a lifetime of work to do.
