Bot researchers at Damballa again noted the existence of Kraken, a huge botnet of some 400,000 machines that keeps one step ahead of security vendors and AV software.
Dark Reading cited Damballa researcher Paul Royal on one troublesome claim about Kraken. At least 50 Fortune 500 firms have been infected with this botnet, and 80 percent of antivirus solutions won't recognize its presence.
Like the Storm botnet that dumps millions of pieces of spam on the Internet, Kraken appears to be a profit-motivated spam tool. Royal cited the usual junk emerging from Kraken spam engines, pushing typical scams for fake products and services.
However, the construction of Kraken has Royal concerned. What operates as a spamming engine today could be a completely different flavor of bot in the future.
Kraken's continued growth likely pushed it to 600,000 machines by now, the report said. Its sophistication ought to make Kraken a priority for security vendors to counter.
