People who used credit or debit cards at one of 14 locations identified by Advance Auto Parts may have had that information accessed via a network breach.
Another company suffered a credit card breach, as Advance Auto Parts disclosed stores in several states exposed transaction details to criminals. An unidentified break-in has been blamed for the problem.
Fourteen stores in 8 states ranging from New York to Louisiana experienced the break-in and subsequent tapping of payment data from customers. Advance Auto Parts said they started contacting customers affected by the breach.
"Safeguarding our customers' confidential financial information is extremely important to Advance Auto Parts, and we take this responsibility very seriously," Darren Jackson, President and Chief Executive Officer, said in a statement.
Not seriously enough, perhaps? Considering the breadth of stores affected, ranging from Syracuse to Atlanta and beyond, we're inclined to think an investigation will reveal an even bigger mess. Probably not on the TJX scale, but we will be pleasantly surprised if the breach is limited to these 14 stores.
