The San Antonio military base should never have had a Google digital imaging vehicle prowling its streets in the first place. That's Google's position after Pentagon brass told their installations to keep the search ad company's mappers away.
A Los Angeles Times report said a DoD spokesperson, Gary Ross of US Northern Command, cited the potential security threat posed by detailed images of military bases.
"We don't have any issues regarding Google and their products, which are very useful tools," Ross said in the report. "But the Street View provides clear imagery of control points, barriers, headquarters and security facilities that pose a risk to our force-protection efforts."
The images have been removed from public view, with a misunderstanding blamed for the incident. Fort Sam Houston officials apparently gave the mapper permission to travel on the base, provided no pictures or video would be taken.
Base officials wanted an online map of the facility to assist legitimate visitors in getting around Fort Sam Houston. However, Google apparently has a policy that mappers are not to venture onto military bases at all.
