Abuse email or the Internet, and someone in the human resources department may end up with your name and a list of your offenses appended to the roster of people fired for their online transgressions.
A study of the phenomenon of Internet-related firings discussed at ITworld.com said adult content isn't the only offender when it comes to Internet usage being a firing offense. The study by the American Management Association and The ePolicy Institute found a third of managers fired people simply for excessive surfing.
Email abuse exists, with managers proving intolerant of any language that could land them in the middle of a harassment lawsuit. 62 percent of managers who fired people over email issues did so because of inappropriate or offensive comments.
Less than a quarter of the email related firings happened due to breaching confidentiality rules. Publicly owned companies in general and regulation-heavy industries like finance and healthcare in particular face substantial repercussions when violations of confidentiality come to light.
Security pros use various tracking methods, including keyloggers, to monitor people, as 45 percent of the study indicated. Their efforts have extended out to the Internet, as 12 percent monitor blogs that mention a business, while 10 percent keep tabs on social networking sites for that purpose.
