An early Christmas present containing hundreds of fixes for the Vista operating system popped up on Microsoft's website.

The voluminous Vista Service Pack 1 includes architectural changes derived from Windows XP as they pertain to security and reliability enhancements, Microsoft said in an overview of the first service pack for their new operating system.
Device drivers and application compatibility have moved steadily upward over the past year. Microsoft needs to keep working on those issues if they want to drive more copies of Vista to their corporate clients as well as mainstream users.
Microsoft described notable changes arriving with the service pack, breaking the lengthy list into several categories. Online, users of Internet Explorer should see JavaScript-intensive websites perform better on Vista, and in line with previous IE releases.
That was one of a number of performance tweaks Microsoft made for Vista in the service pack. But there is a significant caveat to installing SP1 that people need to understand before going forward with it:
The Windows Vista SP1 install process clears the user-specific data that is used by Windows to optimize performance, which may make the system feel less responsive immediately after install. As the customer uses their SP1 PC, the system will be retrained over the course of a few hours or days and will return to the previous level of responsiveness.
Some may miss that piece of information, and we're certain there will be complaints publicized about "Vista running slower" after applying the service pack. As with many things in life, patience will be beneficial here.
