The December 2007 edition of Microsoft's regular patch schedule has fixes for critical issues in Internet Explorer and Windows in store.

The critical fix for the Internet Explorer web browser looks like a patch for a previously undisclosed vulnerability, as a quick review of outstanding issues for IE versions 5 through 7 on the Secunia advisory site does not show anything considered worse than "moderately critical."
An advance notification of pending Microsoft updates arriving on Patch Tuesday said one bulletin for Internet Explorer and six for Windows have been slated for release. That could change at any time.
If those updates arrive as expected, Microsoft will also release at least one critical fix for Windows. One possibility could be the "FindFile()" Buffer Overflow that has been outstanding since September, according to Secunia.
Alternatives to Microsoft products are not immune from the need for occasional fixes. The default database engine in versions of OpenOffice prior to version 2.3.1 could lead to arbitrary code execution, reported security firm F-Secure.
