Problems at Fasthosts have persisted beyond the issues they experienced with a network intrusion in November. What had been described as a small number of customers affected by a breach requiring control panel and FTP password resets has become a more serious problem.
The Times Online said Fasthosts has been forced to shutdown hundreds of websites hosted by the service:
Fasthosts claimed that it had no option other than to perform an emergency shutdown after it discovered that the hackers had tried to use information gleaned from its servers. New passwords had to be sent out by post rather than e-mail to avoid the information being compromised again.
Business owners cited by the Times expressed anger at the financial and other business losses they have incurred as a result of the shutdown. Meanwhile, authorities are looking into the cracking of the master database at Fasthosts.
The timeline for the problem extends back from now into October, when Fasthosts began advising customers privately to change their passwords. The recommendation did not hint at the bigger picture of billing details and other data being accessed by an unknown party.
