Espionage against corporate and government systems in the United States and Europe represents only one portion of the Chinese threat to critical technology infrastructures.

China Poses Major Tech Threat To US

Ongoing efforts in China to improve its technological capabilities continue to come at the expense of victims of their espionage efforts. The potential for havoc China has assembled should make even the most jaded security pro worry.

Ars Technica noted the report from the US-China Economic & Safety Review Commission, newly delivered to Congress. Here's a couple of excerpts that should give security pros a sleepless night or two:

China has developed the capability to wage cyber warfare and to destroy surveillance satellites overhead as part of its tactical, asymmetrical warfare arsenal. With its highly developed reliance on systems of command, control, communications, computers, intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (C4ISR), the American military is significantly exposed to such attacks.

Similarly troubling are the conclusions the Commission reached concerning China's growing reliance on industrial espionage. China continues to supplement its acquisition of new technologies from commercial transfers and direct production partnerships with a large-scale industrial espionage campaign.

The espionage has included various attack vectors against companies, where the attacks try to infect machines and grab critical information. Security experts in Great Britain warned their national corporations and government offices of this threat last year.

When we noted the situation with Unisys blamed for problems protecting DHS systems accessed from China, we received some pushback from the big government vendor. We now politely point out the the US-CESRC report and ask that everyone with a hand in securing domestic infrastructure please do so.
