Although Google sees about 70 percent of incoming mail to Gmail users as being spam, less than a percent of that junk makes it through their filters to recipients.

Gmail may not have the biggest inbox any longer, an honor that goes to the unlimited inboxes of Yahoo and AOL. But it could make a claim as a superhero spam stopper.

Google credited Gmail's spam battling prowess to a number of factors. Chief among them: community participation in spam fighting, via the ubiquitous Report Spam button atop the Gmail inbox.

Our unscientific observations of Gmail find gift card offers and opportunities to work from home for foreign companies, as in money laundering, break through Gmail's filters and arrive in the inbox. By selecting them for the Report Spam treatment, fewer of them should arrive in the future, if at all.

"The really good news is that it seems like spammers are finally starting to get discouraged," Google's Brad Taylor said on the official Google blog.

"Attempts to spam Gmail users have been leveling off over the last year and more recently, even declining slightly."

Google's graph of Gmail spam and what people call attention to with the Report Spam feature showed incoming, pre-filter spam running in the high 70 percent range of all arriving mail. After a few dips and jumps through 2007, it seems to be dropping as Taylor observed.

If Google fans can't get enough of Gmail's top spam fighter, Taylor also appears in an educational video at the post on the Google blog: "Spam, time, and you." Who knew Google had such aspirations for the entertainment industry.
