Microsoft's regularly scheduled monthly patches arrive on Tuesday with fixes for issues rated Critical in the Windows operating system and the Office productivity suite.
Critical Fixes Coming For Office, Windows
Security pros in Windows/Office environments, which encompasses millions of users, will have their work cut out for them when Patch Tuesday arrives on October 9th.
• Five Microsoft Security Bulletin affecting Microsoft Windows with a Maximum Severity rating of Critical. Some of these updates will require a restart and will be detectable using the Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer and the Enterprise Scan Tool.
• One Microsoft Security Bulletin affecting Microsoft Office with a Maximum Severity rating of Critical. These updates will not require a restart and will be detectable using the Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer.
• One Microsoft Security Bulletin affecting Microsoft Windows and Microsoft Office with a Maximum Severity rating of Important. These updates may require a restart and will be detectable using the Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer.
Of the seven bulletins, Microsoft rated four Critical. These pose remote code execution threats to systems should they remain unpatched after patches have been released.
Speed is of the essence in applying patches. Attackers have shown adeptness at quickly creating exploits for revealed vulnerabilities, reducing the window of time people have to get fixes in place.
