Governments Stink At Protecting Computers
Now China says its just as much a victim as everyone else.
News of a successful June intrusion into Pentagon computers by China has been just one of many complaints made about China over computer attacks.
These aren't new complaints. In June 2006, the State Department suffered attacks against computer resources for offices that deal with China and North Korea.
Security specialists in Great Britain likewise contended that China served as the starting point for numerous attacks against business and government computers at that time.
Everyone is getting hacked.
As McAfee noted, Germany blamed China in February for attempts at hacking computers.
Australia and New Zealand have been targeted by Chinese attackers as well.
So guess who's crying 'victim' now? That's right. China:
China has suffered "massive" losses of state secrets through the Internet, a senior official said, as China faces reports that it has raided the computer networks of Western powers.
Vice Minister of Information Industry Lou Qinjian said his country was the target of a campaign of computer infiltration and subversion and proposed a raft of counter-measures including toughened censorship, new security bodies and commercial controls.
Perhaps the Russians can help everyone out with security.
Despite the huge flood of spam and other attacks that flow out of the country, we've never heard the Putin government complain of being attacked, successfully or not, by computer espionage.
