The latest round of patches as summarized by Microsoft has been arriving through the update processes of millions of machines. Compared to previous months, September proved a light month for these fixes.
Only one of the four updates announced by the company addressed an issue they rated as Critical. A vulnerability in Microsoft Agent could have permitted remote code execution if exploited.
Other remote code execution problems existed with two of the three updates rated Important. Fixes for MSN Messenger & Windows Live Messenger, and for Crystal Reports for Visual Studio, shut down these publicly disclosed "zero-day" vulnerabilities.
A fourth issue related to Windows Services for Unix could have permitted privilege elevation on a vulnerable system. Running certain setuid binary files would allow this to happen before the fix.
Microsoft's next scheduled patch release will be October 9th.
