Remote code execution threats received treatment in the August 2007 edition of Microsoft's Security Bulletins. The Windows operating system, Internet Explorer, and the Excel spreadsheet program all required patches.
A vulnerability in Windows Gadgets, part of Vista, could permit remote code execution if left unpatched. Though Vista has been touted as Microsoft's most secure operating system yet, flaws have shown up in the software.
Another high-profile Microsoft product, Windows Media Player, needed a Critical fix. Problems with how the Player parses skin files created a remote code execution issue.
Flaws in XML Core Services, OLE Automation, and the GDI graphics rendering engine library received corrections for similarly critical threats. A cumulative fix for Internet Explorer also closed off remote code execution problems.
Automatic update processes on Windows machines should have delivered these to the appropriate systems already. The broad adoption of Excel worldwide makes it important for admins to ensure the latest patches have been applied.
