A new trojan making the rounds will taunt its victims vocally as it deletes files from a compromised PC.
The Trojan That Talks Trash
If your computer starts talking about deleting your files, it may be a bad case of a new infection landing on the hard drive.
Trend Micro said the new trojan does more than just arrive and display taunting messages, as some have done in the past:
...this Trojan plays a voice message while it performs its malicious routines. It uses the Microsoft Text-To-Speech (TTS) feature to continuously play the following text into spoken words:
You has been infected, I repeat you has been infected and your system files has been deletes. Sorry. Have a nice day and bye bye.
The trojan disables the Task Manager and the Windows Registry Editor, in an attempt to foil typical methods of finding and removing the pest from the system. Trend Micro thinks the trojan can affect system files, but not files that are restricted or in protected folders.
Vint Cerf Isn't Running A Lottery: Lottery scams have been a fixture of email spam for some time. Usually they ask for a fee to cover processing "your winnings," or for your personal details so they can send you your prize.
These are blatant frauds, but criminals persist in trying them. A recent one received mention on Yahoo's official blog.
This particular scam listed the lotto coordinator as Dr. Vinton Cerf. He's better known as one of the creators of the Internet; these days he's also a Google employee. His evangelism duties at the company do not include running lotteries.
When you receive an email about winning a lottery, keep in mind the words of Perl creator Larry Wall: There Ain't No Such Thing As A Free Lunch. It may not be grammatically correct, but it is accurate.
