Spam messages claiming to be from the Department of Justice have been hitting inboxes and bringing along a Trojan downloader.

The latest outbreak of fake, official-looking messages may alarm the numerous people who hate the Bush Administration, and anyone else unwary enough to be taken in by the email.
Symantec researcher Hon Lau said the spam appears to come from the US Department of Justice. The messages allege that a claim against the recipient's business has been filed with the IRS.
Further, the spam says a copy of the original complaint and contact information for the complainant, named Henry Stewart, is attached to the email. Opening the attachment reveals another message, this time asking the person to run a file due to problems encountered with Microsoft Word.
That last file attempts to download additional files from a remote server. Lau said those remote files are currently unavailable.
Lau also noted that these spams give Symantec reason to believe the people behind them were also responsible for fake Microsoft patch emails in recent weeks.
"The executable file used in both attacks is in fact the same but with the file names changed to suit the nature of the social engineering trick used," said Lau.
He continued, "Given the low tech methods employed in these attacks it would appear that they are mounted by relative amateur players."
