The schemers behind planning a plot against JFK International Airport used Google's sophisticated mapping tool to help them.

Videos shot by the plotters of the airport weren't detailed enough for the conspirators to use for their plans. In February 2007, one of them suggested using Google Earth instead.
That suggestion was made in front of a government informant. Excerpts from the criminal complaint against the conspirators said one of them, Abdul Kadir, made that recommendation. The Smoking Gun obtained that excerpt, part of the complaint filed in US District Court in New York.
"Kadir also said that the JFK video was not sufficiently detailed for operational purposes, and told them to use Google Earth software to get more detailed pictures of JFK after they returned to New York," the complaint said.
"Later in the day, Defreitas and the Source showed Kadir the JFK video and Google Earth maps of JFK. Defreitas identified, among other things, the fuel tank locations and the control tower," it continued.
Google Earth has been criticized by several other governments worldwide for making its quality images available to anyone who can download them. That argument has been countered with the assertion that the images in question are available from other sources and have been for some time.
