Internet safety threats jeopardize the usefulness people can find online. It matters greatly to Google; without web surfers hitting their online ads, their revenue stream falls into jeopardy.
Keeping the online experience a safe and productive one involves a variety of "complex and dynamic" issues, according to Panayiotis Mavrommatis and Niels Provos, from Google's Anti-Malware Team. They opened the blog with a discussion of their topic of interest.
"Visiting a compromised web server with a vulnerable browser or plugins can result in your system being infected with a whole variety of malware without any interaction on your part," they noted, referring to the spate of 'drive-by' infections that can happen to people.
"Unfortunately, the scope of the problem has recently been somewhat misreported to suggest that one in 10 websites are potentially malicious. To clarify, a sample-based analysis puts the fraction of malicious pages at roughly 0.1%," the researchers said, citing the analysis they performed and presented at Usenix (PDF link).
China, Germany, Russia, and the United States have demonstrated the majority of malware activity, based on their research into the locations of compromised websites, and the location of malware distribution servers.
Provos and Mavrommatis said they plan to update the Online Security blog periodically, as they look at recent trends and other security-related issues.
