Curing a critical vulnerability in Windows XP, 2000, and 2003 proved more troublesome to a lot of users than the vulnerability itself.

Something old is new again, even if it has only been a couple of weeks. Microsoft's patch MS06-015 has been reissued to address problems with third-party programs affected by the initial patch.
Users of the HP Share-to-Web utility found they could not open the My Documents folder in Windows, which also caused problems with Microsoft Office applications. Also, some systems with NVIDIA graphics cards experienced problems.
The original vulnerability presented a remote code execution problem in Windows due to the way unpatched systems handled COM objects in Windows Explorer. Visiting a maliciously crafted website could have triggered a condition where remote code execution would have been possible.
This release represented one of Microsoft's rare out-of-cycle patch updates. The company has mostly stuck to its schedule of releasing one patch per month on the second Tuesday to address problems with its operating system or software.
That policy did not make a lot of people happy between the March and April patch releases. Active exploits for the createTextRange() vulnerability existed online, and were impacting users. A pair of security companies released temporary patches for the problem until Microsoft eventually released a fix in bulletin MS06-013.
