The folks at the SANS Institute are offering graduate degrees with the first classes starting in February. The program is designed to instruct and teach on cyber security for the future.

SANS says the program isn't for everyone though. Applicants need to have 3.0 GPA and the person will need a strong endorsement from the employer indicating "that the candidate is expected to take on the mantle of security leadership in the future."
Right now, there is a desperate need for quality cybersecurity in this country. This year has shown many weaknesses in both the private and government sectors. Major banks have been hacked, as have primary military security systems and even the Dept. of Defense itself.
Art Ehuan, a former top security chief at Northrup Grumman said, " In upgrading the staff and hiring new people for security management positions, the most difficult problem we face is finding technical security people who also have good management and business and communication skills. The success of our security program depends on finding those people. I have had to remove purely technical security people from management roles because they had never learned how to make the business case in language the business leaders can understand.
"I also teach information security courses at two universities in the Washington area. Those programs, like those at every other university I am aware are almost entirely technical. I know of no program, other than the efforts of SANS Institute, that seeks to train the multifaceted managers we so critically need to improve security in this country."
In the press release, SANS identified to trends in the rise of organized cyber crime. Those include increased interest by organized crime and increasing impact of cyber methods of warfare. The first part accompanies the growth of e-commerce and e-government. Companies get picked off all the time. This seems to be happening all to frequently to just about any company that stores records electronically (which is most of them).
The other is cyber warfare. The best example of this is the recent raids on the military computers and their defense contractors, who appear to have been traced back to China. The SANS director suggests these attacks were carried out by the Chinese military to steal U.S. information.
The SANS program is now taking applications. The cost is $28,000 for those who are into cyber security. Their staff comes from organizations and universities and all are well qualified for the job. For more information check out SANS' website.
