Windows One Care Live Released; Concerns Remain

Following other successful models of beta release, Microsoft has rolled out a beta version of Windows One Care Live, a free online security suite. Coupled with a beta version of Windows Live Safety Center, a free scanning and PC health service, the online security measures are intended to combat ongoing malicious software aimed at Microsoft products.

Windows One Care, labeled by Microsoft as "comprehensive PC health for people who have other things to think about," runs as a background application providing antivirus and firewall protection. Running regular PC tune-ups, the One Care automatically self-updates with the latest security patches released from Microsoft.

Microsoft users, with Windows operating system and Internet Explorer browser present on nearly 90% of the world's computers, are frequent targets of hackers and malware producers. Microsoft regularly releases patches to exploited security flaws in Windows and IE.

Since 2003, Secunia has released 89 advisories on security problems with Internet Explorer. The security company maintains a list of these flaws and denotes whether they remain patched or unpatched. So far, according to Secunia, 21 of 89 advisories have been patched.

Twice this week hackers have released code that could be used to attack computers running on Windows that have not received the latest updated security patches. French Security Incident Response Team (FrSIRT) have provided a sample of the malicious code that exploits a Windows Metaphile graphics.
