In other news, Siemens is going to test a new mobile phone encryption service with 10 corporate-level customers. The service represents Siemens' attempt to secure mobile-based communication.
Also, an article in PC Advisor discussed a survey that cautioned corporate entities planning large-scale changeovers to the Firefox browser. There have been rumblings of increased spyware and other malicious activities targeted at the increasingly popular browser.

Caution Before Changing To Firefox
An article by PC Advisor explored a study that warned corporations about making wholesale adoptions of the Firefox browser. The argument revolves around the safety issues users face when they switch from Internet Explorer to another browser. Gartner, the group conducting the study, believes there may be false sense of security surrounding Firefox…
Individuals are switching to the browser because of the appeal of features such as tabbed browsing, integrated search, better standards support and easy installation and removal, Gartner said. The browser's design - without ActiveX or deep hooks into the operating system - also makes security flaws less serious and patches easier to test and apply.
But Firefox is sure to be targeted by more malicious code as its market share grows, Gartner said. Security experts agree - more and more malicious code, including spyware, is turning up that targets Mozilla-based browsers, although so far most of it doesn't work properly, they said.
Also, the developers at Firefox have a good record for releasing patches when security issues are discovered.
Siemens Testing Mobile Encryption
Because the mobile communication industry is becoming such a prime target for virus writers, companies are attempting to take steps to combat mobile phone vulnerabilities.
One company and testing services designed to secure mobile communications is Siemens. Currently, 10 of their corporate customers are testing an integrated encryption service called Voltage SecureMail. Designed by Voltage Security, SecureMail was designed to keep mobile emails and data hidden from snooping eyes.

Siemens mobile office@vantage uses the Voltage IBE Gateway Server to provide policy-driven encryption services from the edge of the corporate network. Integration between the Siemens Mobile Access Point Server (MAP) and the Voltage IBE Gateway Server provides comprehensive policy-based message security (including encryption, decryption and anti-virus and anti-spam scanning) at the gateway and in many cases means that a virtual private network, or VPN, is no longer necessary.
Novell Looks To Open Source
Novell is allowing members of the open source community to the company's identity management infrastructure as well as Novell's eDirectory Developer Interfaces. The goals for these contributions are development of open-source applications that tap into Novell's authentication system.

It also makes secure authentication possible for protocols that have been unable to support LDAP (Lightweight Directory Access Protocol) in the past.
"LDAP provides an effective interface for many directory-enabled applications," said Alan DeKok, FreeRADIUS project leader. "With Novell's contribution to the FreeRADIUS project, applications and devices that are built on RADIUS now have the option of providing secure authentication using the widely deployed eDirectory."
Jeremy Allison, Samba co-author added, "This is of great benefit to the Samba project. It allows us to integrate secure, single sign-on authentication for Windows clients using Samba Domain controllers with the award winning Novell eDirectory. CIFS and SMB clients can now share integrated authentication in the customer enterprise environment."
