For those of you who dont know what a distributed denial-of-service attack is, I will give some explanation. It is a type of attack in which someone compromises a number of remote systems and then uses those compromised systems to attack a single system all at once. The flood of information coming from all of the compromised systems usually forces the target system to shut down, but the most immediate consequence is the fact that legitimate users of the service cannot get in i.e. denial-of-service. The group of compromised computers is usually called a botnet, and apparently are the greatest threat to network security out there today (even over viruses, malware, etc.).

Corero’s product, which is called the DDoS Defense System (DDS) blocks application-level attacks as well as direct network attacks. Application level attacks are a newer variant of the popular method, which is explained on the product site as “DDoS attacks not only send network packets, but they actually complete TCP connections from the attacker to the victim service.  Once the TCP connection is made, the attacking computers make repeated requests to the application in an attempt to exhaust the resources of the application, rendering it unable to respond to all of its other requests.”. They couple this with their SecureWatch Plus service to give companies full, expert protection against attacks, which is probably why they are the world leaders in DDoS protection. There is a good deal more specific information of their site, so visit www.corero.com to learn more.
