A bogus email claiming Italian prime minister Silvio Berlusconi has been murdered by an Israeli soldier contains a Trojan file that can infect a Windows PC.
The fake email purportedly comes from bbc.italy2006@bbc.com, with a variety of subject lines like "Berlusconi la morte", "Berlusconi di terrorismo", "Berlusconi Tragedia", and "Berlusconi di omicidio." Security software firm Sophos reported a Trojan horse called Troj/Dloadr-ALM accompanies the message.
The malicious email contains a file called necfotos.zip, which contains an image of Berlusconi (silvio01.gif) and a malicious PIF file (silvio02.pif).
"The news report is - of course - false, and launching the PIF file will not show you a picture of Signor Berlusconi, but instead execute malicious code on your Windows PC," wrote Graham Cluley, senior technology consultant at Sophos. "Hackers are exploiting the public's interest in politics, current events and breaking news to spread malware."
This is just the latest in what has been a favored activity of attackers who use mass emails to attempt to infect machines. Michael Jackson, Pope John Paul II, and plenty of other celebrities have been used as enticements to execute payloads on a system.
The safest course of action when receiving a suspicious email of any type is to delete it from one's inbox. Keep antivirus software signatures and engines up to date.
